Background Research and Relevancy:

In Australia 95% of our electrical energy is created by non-renewable sources including, coal and oil. Non-renewable energy poses problems, firstly it is finite and secondly through the greenhouse effect the planet is warming up. The hottest 10 years on record since NASA began taking readings 134 years ago, have all occurred since 2000. Subsequently, renewable energy is the way forward. Across two days we cannot make a renewable energy project that is commercially viable, however we can model the effectiveness of one type of renewable energy; wind. In 2015 33.7% of Australia’s renewable energy came from wind and therefore we plan to model how efficient wind energy can be on small, time restricted scale.

How does this, “Make the world a little better?” If we were completely unreliant on non-renewable energy sources in the future it would solve environmental issues. On the 7th of December 2015 Beijing had a smog cloud the size of California due to coal. Our project will demonstrate what a clean and efficient energy wind power is and it could solve issues such as Beijing's smog, while working in combination with other renewable energy sources.

We could harness the portability of this model by attaching a device charging element to the turbine generator. In an application that could be used instantly people would be able to charge their phones while ‘on-the-go’ without having to worry about a power socket, or running out of a power source. It may not be a powerful enough power source to be viable, but our model could prove their is potential for this kind of product.

A wind turbine is the opposite of a fan, as it uses wind to make electricity. The propellers spin as a result of the kinetic energy wind provides. By spinning a shaft connected to a generator, the propellers turn kinetic energy into electricity. Electric motors are copper coiled around iron and this is then charged by electricity, which turns the copper into an electromagnet. The force of the electromagnet will compete with a magnet that already exists inside the motor forcing rotation. In contrast a generator will force the magnet to spin creating an electric field.

Wind energy per unit is not as efficient as coal energy. A wind turbine can utilise at maximum 50% of the wind energy, while coal can produce steam that allows the turbine to utilise 85% of the energy that passes it. However, wind farms mean that wind energy can be just as potent as coal, although it does require more space. From a portable point of view wind energy is much more viable as coal energy cannot be produced on a small scale.

In terms of design we have chosen a 3-propeller set-up. As the design moves from 2 propellers to 3 there is an efficiency improvement of 3%, however 4 propellers has a negligible improvement.

  • Cardboard tubes e.g. toilet paper rolls, glad wrap rolls, wrapping paper rolls

  • Electrical wire - supplied by DT dept.
  • Glue gun - supplied by DT dept.
  • ‘Plug in wires’ - supplied by the science dept.
  • Alligator clips - supplied by the science dept.
  • Clippers - supplied by the DT dept.

Initial Concerns:

  1. How do we attach the turbine propellers?
  2. How do we lengthen the shaft of the generator so that it will spin in an easier and more productive fashion
  3. How does Nate Lyon manage to destroy the South African Batting line up with a flick of his wrist?

Thursday, November 3rd

SESSION 1

  • Further researched angles of propellers 
  • Cut the strips of polystyrene for the propellers. 
  • Located propeller roatator

Session 2

  • Attatched propellers to propeller rotator 
  • Connected the wires from the DC Motor to the voltmeter
  • Soldered the wires to the DC Motor to create the circuit for the kinetic energy created by the rotation of the motor. 
  • Attatched plastic cups to propeller to increase voltage

Session 3

  • Solder from wires to motor breaks and we had to re-solder the connection
  • Base is created out of 2L milk carton and filled with sand as a weight 
  • Body is made out of glad-wrap cardboard cylinders
  • Wires are thread through the body and base to attatch to measuring meters --> Used a knife a dead weight to thread wires through

Friday, 4th November 

Session 1

  • Hot glued DC motor to the cardboard body to create a strong base to help the propellor rotator and propellers. 
  • Hot glued propellers in the propeller roatator. 
  • Created a supporting base for the Milk Carton.

Session 2

  • Tested the final product, with voltmeter --> Came back with a positive reading!
  • Addressed some remaining issues to do with one of the propellers
  • Made sure base was attached to the carton and the structure was portable

Groupwork:

Working in Groups is always hard, so we made a committed effort to deligating different roles to different people from the start. This way, we worked extremely efficiently whilst still being able to collaborate for large aspects of the project. Having a person from each science helped greatly, as their knowledge of their area of science added a new perspective and improved insight into our project --> Similar to Australia's four pronged fast bowling lineup consisting of a fiery Mitchell Starc (Matthew Putt), a composed Josh Hazlewood (Zak Knight), the unforgiving Peter Siddle (Zac Kertesz) and the handy Mitch Marsh (Lucas Tarlington) . Not only this, but we were guided by the help of Mr Fitzsimmons who acted as the Nathan Lyon that brought our bowling attack together.
